I was thinking of writing this blog on ‘The Importance of Cultivating a Reading Habit in Organizations’ for quite some time and during those initial days, I was confused as my mind confabulated, about my acquiescence on this subject. As my thoughts susurrated through my mind, a simple moment of doing good brought much joie de vivre. The distracted mind finally gave way to writing about the importance of reading. With a lot of veneration about the contents of story, fantasy, fiction, non-fiction, memoir, autobiography, self-help & many more types of books, I thought of spreading the message of reading. It is generally observed that productivity increases for many working humans, if one reads. The thought itself invigorates the spirit of nobleness, providing the fact that this arduous exercise of writing this article may finally help humankind.

So, the question comes to one’s mind as to how reading helps employees in an organization.

There are many organizations in the world, where we observe that employees due to work pressure need some time to rejuvenate themselves to reach their optimum productivity. One of the main causes of this decreasing productivity is frustration with the job. Many a times, that leads to resignation or the organization offering a pink slip. There are times when a reprehensible argument sometimes leads to catastrophic results.

Then how can reading help in this regard?

Reading a book helps us to connect through our imagination with the thoughts created by the author. We get linked with the characters and through them, we get connected with life. Much of the time, when we feel unhappy or are pondering negative feelings, these book characters visit our memories and help us to get through those troubling thoughts. These may not happen with everyone, but many of us remember one or the other lines from the book and get inspired to move on in life.

Reading books help our brain to work and re-work. I personally feel that it’s a brain exercise. The nerves and the neurons need to pass information obtained by reading a book and I feel that somewhere in the body this information may remain stored. Scientists may agree or disagree, but I personally feel that brain works better as we increase our reading habits.

Reading books leads to a kind of feeling which remains for months. Have you also experienced the same feeling after completing a book? Does that feeling persist over months? If yes, then the question is what makes book reading exceptional? Whenever I read a book and complete the same, a kind of happiness persists, which I may not feel when I watch a movie. The video ends and the thoughts also terminate within an hour or so.

Reading books helps to increase one’s vocabulary. I generally write the words with their meanings, when I read. It helps me to understand a word and its uses. This is a practical way to understand a word and its meanings.

Reading may have the ability to strengthen one’s brain activity and that in turn may help in increasing neuron activity. To understand more, you may love to do some more exploration on this subject.

So, if you are at work and have a frustrating delirium, the lines from the book may shimmer your mind. This may have the ability to reinvigorate and like magic may levitate one’s soul and face life’s challenges gracefully.

I hope you may have liked reading this blog and if you do so, please take some time to place your comments here. This support is likely to help me to do more research on the subject.

Indeed reading acts as a catalyst for nurturing the brain and maximises output. I'm confident that this thought would intrigue minds to delve deeper on its scientific efficacy and in-turn incorporate this practice across organisations.
